XenoCam 5Gamer comics like Penny Arcade or PvP generally don't do much for me (though those two are excellent examples of the genre). Generally, they strike me as hinging two much on "Ph33r my 1337 sk1llz" and "Look, this game made illogical or unrealistic design choices," and I'm not a hardcore enough gamer to appreciate this. That said, Clan BOB's The Life of Riley is an interesting variant on this. First, the ego-trip nature of the gamer strip is completely reversed. Our heroes tend to get creamed when they play online (this may have something to do with them playing on the team against the Bad Boys of Computer Science that lost 119-4 early in the days of the comic), and the particulars of the games used are usually pretty transparent or accessible to the non-fan. For its genre-defying nature, and for the casual mix of vampires, demons, presidential elections, and anime tropes with the "everyday life" of the main characters, Life of Riley is definitely worth a look. |
